EMDR and Sand-tray

Changing the memories that form the way we see ourselves also changes the way we view others. Therefore, our relationships, job performance, what we are willing to do or are able to resist, all move in a positive direction.” Francine Shapiro. Creator of EMDR EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Sandtray therapy are both powerful therapeutic approaches that can be used individually or in combination to help clients process and heal from traumatic experiences and other emotional challenges.

EMDR is a structured therapy approach that involves the use of bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, hand tapping, or auditory tones, to facilitate the processing of distressing memories and experiences. During an EMDR session, the client is guided to recall specific memories or triggers while simultaneously focusing on the bilateral stimulation. This process helps to desensitize the client to the emotional distress associated with the memories and reprocess them in a more adaptive way.

Sand-tray therapy, on the other hand, is a form of expressive therapy that involves the use of a tray filled with sand and miniature objects or figures. Clients are invited to create scenes or landscapes in the sand tray that represent their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The act of creating in the sand allows clients to access deeper layers of their psyche and explore complex emotions and conflicts in a nonverbal way.

When used together, EMDR and Sand-tray therapy can complement each other effectively. EMDR can help clients access and process traumatic memories at a deeper level, while Sand-tray therapy can provide a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore and express their emotions in a nonverbal way. The tactile and visual nature of Sand-tray therapy can enhance the processing of emotions and memories during EMDR sessions, leading to deeper insights and healing.
